Wandel Projektion 1, Lightpaintinfoto aus einer Performance, aufskaliert als Druck, Zülpich 2007
In the performance rehearsal Niflungenbass with my brother Mario on the bass guitar in the boathouse in Zülpich, a graphic 2-dimensional image sequence projection gains spatial depth by means of a cross-fade through a 2nd projector, which becomes a three-dimensional projection as it progresses through bubble wrap.
The viewer only ever sees the projection surface and no matter how 3-dimensional the surface is filled, it remains 2-dimensional. Anyone who does not know a bubble wrap can certainly not draw any conclusions about the action taking place on the overhead projector behind them, outside their visual field of perception.
What actually happens on the overhead projector looks completely different in the projection. The projection image would only be comprehensible to those who are familiar with overhead projectors and bubble wrap and can therefore decipher every movement on the projection surface as a three-dimensional interplay between hands, color and materials.
The 2-dimensional projection encourages much more free interpretation than the real work actually carried out by the artist at the projector.
