17 “But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:17-18)

In this passage, Jesus teaches about the importance of sincerity and humility in one’s spiritual practices, specifically fasting. He advises against publicly displaying one’s fasting, as the hypocrites do, but rather to do so in secret, where only God can see. This approach allows one to focus on their relationship with God, rather than seeking human approval or recognition. Jesus promises that God, who sees what is done in secret, will reward those who fast with this attitude of humility and sincerity.

This film was created in the course of the preparations for the Lenten performance in St. Martin’s Church in Euskirchen.
