In retrospect, decades later, the performance “Europe” probably expressed my inner enthusiasm for the union of European countries into the EU. Open borders and a common currency were initially the visible expressions of what I considered to be a long overdue geopolitical move.

I wasn’t aware of the economic problems facing the different economic zones. In my early years, when I worked as a grape picker in France, for example, I once received two French francs for one German mark. When I returned to Germany in late autumn, my French francs were exchanged back at a rate of 3:1, which was really annoying. Actually, it should have been clear to every economist that a common currency should be pretty much the last step in a merger, but unfortunately it was the first.

Stier im Sturm (Taurus in the Storm) is an imprint of a painting executed on an overhead projector. It is the last image of the performance, on which I then placed the block to darken the performance. The liquid projector paints were absorbed by the paper, thus forming the last image of the performance. In later years, I allowed the paint to dry on the foil and then laminated it.
